Deciding when to continue a relationship can be tricky business. Sometimes, a partner ends a potentially meaningful relationship because he or she is afraid to muster the confidence to continue. At other times, a partner allows an incompatible relationship to drag on because he or she fears missing out on meaningful romance. In the eye of the relationship storm, the stakes are high and making sound decisions is difficult.

It’s a brutal landscape.

Here is a solution I propose: relationship doubts be elevated to a judge for breakup decision-making. And that judge be Meryl Streep.

We will abide by her ruling and it will be law.

Time and again, she has played characters who make principled, rigorous decisions under blistering pressure.

In Doubt, Meryl brings the full authority of her position as a Catholic nun to prevent a priest from abusing children. Are we sure of the priest’s guilt? We are not. But, in times of breakups and potential child molestations, a firm hand is essential and Meryl will bring that to her role.

In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl is a tyrannical fashion industry boss. Should we admire the way she leads Stanley Tucci on into thinking he has been promoted? Of course not. But the right relationship breakup decisions are ultimately selfish. Meryl’s cold, cunning eye will lead her to make the best decision for you and your future.

Meryl’s mesmerizingly tough performances in The Giver and The Iron Lady demonstrate that she is the correct person for this role.

Meryl will overlook the flash of a new relationship, the fun meals out, the good sex, and do what needs to be done for the good of creating efficient and romantic partnerships.

I put my faith in her, knowing that she is capable of doing what I cannot. Blessed be Meryl, Ruler of the Relationship Universe. Amen.
